The Money Saved Not Drinking Calculator shows how much cash you keep each day, week, month and year after you stop buying alcohol. You enter the date of your first alcohol-free day and what you used to spend on drinks in a typical week, and the result updates as you type. The tool runs in your browser. It counts money and, if you add it, the calories you did not drink. It does not make health claims. Think of the result as a straight-line estimate based on your own usual spending, so the more accurate your weekly figure, the more useful the total.

How to use the Money Saved Not Drinking Calculator

  1. Set the First alcohol-free day date box. It starts 29 days before today. You cannot pick a date in the future.
  2. Change the Spent on alcohol per week box to what you used to spend in a normal week. It starts at 60.
  3. Check the Currency symbol box. It starts at $, so change it if you use a different symbol.
  4. Optional: type a figure in the Calories from drinks per week box. Leave it empty if you only want money.
  5. Read the result. The headline shows the amount saved so far, with the number of days, the amount per month and the amount per year. Scroll to Milestones from your first day to see the amount saved at days 7, 30, 90, 180, 365 and 730. Reached milestones are highlighted.

There is no button to press. The figures refresh as you type, so you can change the weekly spend and watch the monthly and yearly totals move.

There is no button to press. Change any box and the result updates as you type. Leave the calories box empty if you only want the money.

The table of milestones shows the date of day 7, 30, 90, 180, 365 and 730, counting your first day as day 1.

How do I work out what I spent on alcohol?

Add up a typical week of drinking: bar tabs, bottles bought for home and takeaway drinks. That total is your weekly spend, and it goes in the Spent on alcohol per week box. The alcohol cost calculator on this site adds drinks and prices for you if you would rather not add them by hand.

Use a normal week, not your best or worst one. If your spending varies a lot, average several weeks. The tool multiplies whatever you enter, so a low figure gives a low saving.

How is the money saved each day worked out?

The tool divides your weekly spend by 7 to get a daily amount, then multiplies that by the number of days since you stopped. The formula is days x (weekly spend / 7). It is a straight line from what you used to spend, with no interest or other costs added.

For example, 70 a week gives 10 a day. The table shows the saving at three milestones:

DaySaved at 70 a week
770
30300
90900

Calories work the same way. Calories not drunk = calories from drinks per week / 7 x days. At 700 calories a week, that is 100 a day, or 3,000 after 30 days.

How much do I save in a year?

The yearly figure is your weekly spend multiplied by 52. The monthly figure is your weekly spend multiplied by 52 and divided by 12. At 70 a week, that is 3,640 a year and 303.33 a month.

These totals assume you would have spent the same amount every week. They show what you did not spend, not a change you can see in your bank account.

Does the calculator count the first day?

Yes. The first alcohol-free day counts as day 1, so a start date of today gives a result of 1 day. The day count is therefore one higher than the number of full days that have passed since the start date. If you started on 1 October and today is 30 October, the result shows 30 days.

How much money will I save if I stop drinking?

You save your usual weekly spend divided by 7 for every alcohol-free day. At 70 a week that is 10 a day, 300 after 30 days and 3,640 over a year. The table shows the amount and the calendar date for each milestone, worked out the same way as the tool.

How this tool works and where the numbers come from

Days = days from the first alcohol-free day to today, counting the first day as day 1. Saved = weekly spend / 7 x days. Month = weekly x 52 / 12; year = weekly x 52. Calories not drunk = weekly calories / 7 x days.

Frequently asked questions

Why does the start date default to 29 days ago?

The First alcohol-free day box starts 29 days before today, which makes the result begin at 30 days. Change it to the day you actually stopped drinking. The date can be today or any earlier day, but not a day in the future.

Is my information saved or sent anywhere?

Your start date, weekly spend, currency symbol and calories are stored only in your browser. They are never sent anywhere.

What if I do not know how many calories are in my drinks?

The calorie note only appears when you enter a figure in the Calories from drinks per week box. If you do not know the calories, the alcohol calorie calculator on this site works out the calories of a drink for you.

Can I use the calculator if I stopped drinking a while ago?

Yes. Set the First alcohol-free day date box to the day you stopped. The figures for days, savings and milestones will update to match, as long as the date is not in the future.

Can I use a weekly spend that changed over time?

The calculator uses one weekly figure for the whole period. For a rough total, enter your average weekly spend.

What if I had a drink after my first day?

The calculator counts every day from the first day you enter, so move the First alcohol-free day box to the day you started your current run if you want that run only.
