How to use the wine bottle pour calculator
- Open the Bottle dropdown and choose a size, such as 750 ml. If your bottle is not in the list, choose Custom and type its volume in the Bottle size (ml) box.
- Open the Glass size dropdown and choose a pour: 125 ml small UK glass, 150 ml, 5 US fl oz US standard pour, 175 ml medium UK glass, 6 US fl oz, or 250 ml large UK glass.
- If your pour is different from the list, choose Custom and type the volume in the Glass size (ml) box. Measure a pour once in ml so the number is accurate.
- Enter the wine’s strength in the Strength (% ABV) box. It starts at 12.5, so change it if your label shows a different figure.
- Read the headline, such as “5.1 glasses in a 750 ml bottle.” The number of full glasses and the wine left over appear below it.
- Check the table for the alcohol in one glass and in the full bottle, shown in UK units, US standard drinks and grams of pure alcohol.

How many glasses of wine are in a standard 750 ml bottle?
A standard 750 ml bottle gives about 5 glasses when each pour is 5 US fl oz, which is about 148 ml. The exact figure is 5.1, so you get five full glasses and 11 ml left over. A 150 ml pour gives exactly 5 glasses.
The count comes from one division: glasses = bottle volume in ml ÷ glass volume in ml. One US fluid ounce is 29.5735 ml, so a 5 fl oz pour is 147.9 ml. Compare the usual pours:
| Glass size | Volume | Glasses from a 750 ml bottle |
|---|---|---|
| 125 ml small UK glass | 125 ml | 6 exactly |
| 150 ml | 150 ml | 5 exactly |
| 5 US fl oz | 147.9 ml | 5.1 |
| 175 ml medium UK glass | 175 ml | 4.29 |
| 250 ml large UK glass | 250 ml | 3 exactly |
Do 4 glasses of wine equal a bottle?
Four glasses equal a 750 ml bottle only when each glass holds about 187.5 ml, or roughly 6.3 US fl oz. That is larger than the 175 ml medium UK glass. Most standard pours are smaller, so a bottle usually gives more than four.
Divide 750 by 4 and you get 187.5 ml per glass. With the 175 ml medium UK glass, the bottle pours 4.29 glasses: four full glasses with 50 ml left over.
How many glasses of wine are in a magnum?
A magnum holds 1.5 litres, twice a standard bottle, so it pours about 10 glasses. Using 150 ml glasses gives exactly 10. With 5 US fl oz pours you get about 10.1 glasses, and with 175 ml glasses you get about 8.6.
Each figure is the 1,500 ml bottle volume divided by the glass volume. A larger bottle does not change the rule, only the number at the top of the division.
How many glasses are in a half bottle of wine?
A half bottle holds 375 ml. That pours 2.5 glasses of 150 ml or about 2.1 glasses of 175 ml. At 175 ml, two full glasses use 350 ml and leave 25 ml in the bottle.
Half bottles are a quarter of the way between a single glass and a full bottle in volume, so they suit smaller servings. The tool shows the exact split for any pour you choose.
How many standard drinks are in a glass of wine?
One standard drink of wine is 5 US fl oz of 12% wine, which holds about 14 g of pure alcohol. A 5 fl oz glass at 12.5% is 1.04 US standard drinks and 1.85 UK units. The full 750 ml bottle at the same strength is 5.28 US standard drinks and 9.38 UK units.
| Measure | One 5 US fl oz glass | Full 750 ml bottle |
|---|---|---|
| UK units (at 12.5%) | 1.85 | 9.38 |
| US standard drinks (at 12.5%) | 1.04 | 5.28 |
Stronger wines contain more alcohol per glass, so change the Strength (% ABV) box to match your label. For a closer look at the drink count, see the standard drinks in a bottle of wine page.
How big is a restaurant glass of wine?
Restaurant pours vary, and a glass that looks like 5 oz is often larger than that. UK pubs commonly serve wine in 125 ml, 175 ml and 250 ml glasses. The reliable way to get an accurate count is to measure the pour in ml once and enter that number in the Glass size (ml) box after choosing Custom.
To measure a pour, put wine into a measuring jug or a graduated container, read the volume in ml, and use that figure. The 250 ml option is the largest preset, so any bigger pour needs Custom.
How many glasses are in each bottle size?
A standard 750 ml bottle pours about five glasses of 148 ml (5 US fl oz) or six glasses of 125 ml. Larger bottles scale in proportion: a 1.5 litre magnum holds twice as many. The table lists the number of glasses for every common bottle size and glass size, worked out by the same calculation as the tool.
| Bottle | 125 ml | 150 ml | 5 US fl oz | 175 ml | 6 US fl oz | 250 ml |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 187 ml (single serve) | 1.5 | 1.2 | 1.3 | 1.1 | 1.1 | 0.7 |
| 375 ml (half bottle) | 3 | 2.5 | 2.5 | 2.1 | 2.1 | 1.5 |
| 750 ml (standard) | 6 | 5 | 5.1 | 4.3 | 4.2 | 3 |
| 1 litre | 8 | 6.7 | 6.8 | 5.7 | 5.6 | 4 |
| 1.5 litres (magnum) | 12 | 10 | 10.1 | 8.6 | 8.5 | 6 |
| 3 litres | 24 | 20 | 20.3 | 17.1 | 16.9 | 12 |
How this tool works and where the numbers come from
Glasses = bottle volume / glass volume. A US fluid ounce is 29.5735 ml, so a 5 fl oz pour is 147.9 ml. Bottle sizes are the US standards of fill. UK units = ABV x ml / 1,000; a US standard drink is 14 g of pure alcohol.

Frequently asked questions
Does the calculator show how much wine is left over?
Yes. The result lists the full glasses and the wine left over in ml. For a 750 ml bottle with 5 US fl oz pours, the leftover is 11 ml.
Why does a 5 fl oz glass show as 148 ml?
One US fluid ounce is 29.5735 ml, so 5 fl oz is 147.9 ml. The tool rounds that to 148 ml in the result.
Does the strength setting change the number of glasses?
No. The Strength (% ABV) box only changes the alcohol table, such as UK units and grams of pure alcohol. The glass count depends only on the bottle and glass volumes.
Can I use a bottle size that is not in the dropdown?
Yes. Choose Custom in the Bottle dropdown and type the volume in the Bottle size (ml) box.
Does this tool say how much wine is safe to drink?
No. The tool counts volume and alcohol. It does not say that any number of glasses is safe or unsafe.
Why might my own count differ from a restaurant’s?
Pours are not standardized, so the same bottle can yield different numbers of glasses in different places. Measure the pour you are served and enter it with Custom for a count that matches it.
