The drinks per week calculator on this page adds up how many drinks you have in a seven-day week and shows the result in UK units, standard drinks, alcohol-free days and an average per day. It is a free, browser-based tool. You pick a drink, enter its size and strength, then type a number for each day from Monday to Sunday. The result shows the weekly totals, a day-by-day table and a yearly total at that pace. The tool counts one kind of drink for the whole week, so if you mix drinks, the alcohol unit calculator on this site is the better fit. The page does not judge any amount you enter.

How to use the drinks per week calculator

  1. Open the Drink dropdown and pick a preset, such as beer 12 fl oz can 5%. To enter your own drink, choose Custom drink.
  2. If you chose Custom drink, type the drink’s volume in the Size box and set the Unit dropdown to match the measure on your label.
  3. Enter the alcohol percentage in the Strength (% ABV) box.
  4. Type the number of drinks into each day box, from Monday to Sunday. Enter 0 for any day without a drink.
  5. Open the Country dropdown and choose the country whose standard drink you want to see. The list has 21 countries.
  6. Read the result. It gives a headline such as “4 drinks a week”, a line with the UK units and standard drinks, the number of alcohol-free days, the table “Your week, day by day”, and a sentence with your averages and yearly total.
  7. Press Copy link to copy the page address. Your counts are kept in that address.

The page starts with 2 beers on Friday and Saturday, so you can see a full result before you change anything. Nothing you enter is sent anywhere.

Leave a day at 0, or blank, for an alcohol-free day. The week is counted from Monday to Sunday.

How do I work out how many drinks I have per week?

Add up the number you enter for each day, Monday to Sunday. The headline shows that total, such as “4 drinks a week”. For example, 2 beers on Friday and 2 on Saturday make 4 drinks, 7.1 UK units and 5 alcohol-free days. Because the tool counts one kind of drink for the whole week, enter the same drink for every day.

What counts as one drink?

One drink is whatever size and strength you enter, so the amount of alcohol changes with both. A 12 fl oz can of 5% beer, a 5 fl oz glass of 12% wine and a 1.5 fl oz shot of 40% spirits each count as 1.0 US standard drink. The tool works out grams of pure alcohol with this rule: ml × strength ÷ 100 × 0.789.

How do I calculate my average drinks per day?

Divide the weekly total by 7 to get the average per day. Divide it by the number of days with at least one drink to get the average on drinking days. A week with 4 drinks spread over 2 days gives 0.6 a day overall and 2 per drinking day. The yearly total is the weekly total × 52, so 4 drinks a week gives 208 drinks over 52 weeks. In a second example, 1 beer a day from Monday to Friday and 3 on each weekend day gives 11 drinks, an average of 1.6 a day and 572 drinks over 52 weeks.

How many UK units are 10 drinks a week?

Use this rule: units = drinks × strength (% ABV) × ml ÷ 1,000. The answer depends on the drink, so the figures differ by size and strength:

Drink presetUK units per drink10 drinks a week
Beer 12 fl oz can 5%1.7717.7
Beer UK pint 4%2.2722.7
Wine 175 ml glass 12%2.121.0
Spirits 25 ml single 40%1.010.0

Does the calculator use US or UK drinks?

It uses both. The UK units line is always shown, and the standard drinks line uses the country you select from the Country dropdown. Standard drinks = grams in your drink ÷ grams in the chosen country’s standard drink. The four standard drink sizes used are:

CountryGrams in one standard drink
US14 g
UK8 g
Canada13.45 g
Australia10 g

How do I work out my drinks per week?

Add up the drinks you have on each day of the week. Two beers on Friday and two on Saturday is four drinks a week, an average of 0.6 a day or 2 on the days you drink. Multiply by 52 for a year. The table shows two worked weeks with the units and standard drinks each adds up to.

How this tool works and where the numbers come from

Weekly drinks = the sum of the seven daily counts. Units = drinks x (ABV x ml / 1,000). Standard drinks = drinks x grams of pure alcohol per drink / grams in the chosen country’s standard drink. Averages divide by 7, or by the days with at least one drink.

Frequently asked questions

Is the information I enter stored or sent anywhere?

Nothing you enter is sent anywhere. If you press Copy link, your counts are kept in the page address so you can reuse them.

Does the calculator tell me whether my drinking is too much?

No. The page makes no health claim and does not judge any amount. It shows the totals, units and averages, and a doctor or health professional can help you understand what those numbers mean for you.

Can I track more than one kind of drink in a week?

Not with this tool, which counts one kind of drink for the whole week. For a mix of drinks, use the alcohol unit calculator on this site, which takes a list of drinks.

What do alcohol-free days mean in the result?

Alcohol-free days are the days in the week with zero drinks. The second example has 0 alcohol-free days because it has at least one drink every day.

What if my drink is not in the preset list?

Choose Custom drink from the Drink dropdown, then enter the size in the Size box, set the Unit dropdown, and type the strength in the Strength (% ABV) box.
