Calories in a Glass of Wine
Choose a wine style and a glass size to see the calories in a glass and in a whole bottle, split into alcohol and carbohydrate.
Free · runs in your browser · nothing is uploaded
This calorie calculator shows how many calories are in a glass of wine. You pick a wine style, check its strength and carbohydrate content, and choose a glass size, and the tool works out the calories for that glass, the split between alcohol and carbohydrate, and the total for a whole 750 ml bottle. It runs in your browser and is free to use.
Most of the calories in wine come from alcohol, so strength matters more than colour. A red and a white of similar strength end up within a few calories of each other. The tool lets you start from typical values for red, white, rosé, dessert and light wines, then replace them with the figures on your own bottle when you have them.

How to use the calories in a glass of wine calculator
- Open the Wine dropdown and choose a style: Red wine, White wine, Rose, Dessert wine dry, Dessert wine sweet, Light wine, or Custom. Choosing a style fills in the Strength and Carbohydrate boxes for you.
- Check the Strength (% ABV) box against the label on your bottle. If the label says 12.5%, type 12.5.
- Check the Carbohydrate (g per 100 ml) box. Sweeter wines have more carbohydrate, so this figure changes the result most for dessert wines.
- Open the Glass size dropdown and pick 125 ml, 150 ml, 5 US fl oz, 175 ml, 6 US fl oz, 250 ml, or Custom.
- If you chose Custom, type your glass volume in the Glass size (ml) box.
- Enter a number in the Glasses per week box to see your weekly total.
- Read the result. The headline shows the calories in one glass, followed by the split between alcohol and carbohydrate and the calories in a whole 750 ml bottle.
Editing the Strength or Carbohydrate box switches the Wine dropdown to Custom, so you can see that your numbers no longer match the style. A Copy link button sits below the controls as well.
Read the bottle figure beside the glass figure to compare one pour with a whole 750 ml bottle. Change the Wine dropdown while keeping the same glass size to compare styles.
How many calories are in a glass of red wine?
A standard 5 US fl oz glass of red wine at 13.3% ABV and 2.6 g carbohydrate per 100 ml contains about 124 kcal. The tool splits that into 109 kcal from alcohol and 15 kcal from carbohydrate.
The calculation uses two conversion rules. Alcohol provides 7 kcal per gram, and carbohydrate provides 4 kcal per gram. To find the grams of alcohol, multiply the volume in ml by the strength, divide by 100, then multiply by 0.789 (the density of ethanol in grams per ml). For a 148 ml glass, that gives 15.5 g of alcohol, or about 109 kcal, plus 3.9 g of carbohydrate, or about 15 kcal.
How many calories are in a bottle of wine?
A 750 ml bottle of red wine contains about 629 kcal, and a bottle of white wine about 612 kcal, using the style values in the tool. Rosé comes in at about 611 kcal per bottle. Dessert wines are much higher, at about 1,138 kcal for dry dessert wine and 1,198 kcal for sweet dessert wine, because they are stronger and carry more sugar.
Does white wine have fewer calories than red?
Only slightly, and the reason is strength rather than colour. White wine in the tool is set at 12.9% ABV, against 13.3% for red, so a 175 ml glass of white comes to about 143 kcal, while the same size glass of red is 147 kcal. Of that 147 kcal, 129 comes from alcohol. A white wine with a higher strength than the red would have more calories per glass.
How many calories are in a glass of sweet wine?
A glass of sweet dessert wine has far more calories than a dry table wine, because it adds carbohydrate calories on top of the alcohol. Using 19% ABV and 13.7 g carbohydrate per 100 ml, a 125 ml glass works out to roughly 200 kcal, with about 131 kcal from alcohol and about 69 kcal from carbohydrate.
How many calories are in a glass of each wine style?
A 5 US fl oz glass of red or white wine is about 120 to 125 kcal, rose is about 120, and a sweet dessert wine in the same glass is about 235 kcal. A larger glass or a stronger wine adds calories in proportion. The table gives calories per glass for six styles in four glass sizes.
| Wine style | 125 ml | 5 US fl oz (148 ml) | 175 ml | 250 ml | 750 ml bottle |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Red wine (13.3%) | 105 | 124 | 147 | 210 | 629 |
| White wine (12.9%) | 102 | 121 | 143 | 204 | 612 |
| Rose (12%) | 102 | 120 | 143 | 204 | 611 |
| Dessert wine, dry (19%) | 190 | 224 | 266 | 379 | 1,138 |
| Dessert wine, sweet (19%) | 200 | 236 | 280 | 399 | 1,198 |
| Light wine (8%) | 61 | 72 | 86 | 122 | 367 |
How this tool works and where the numbers come from
Calories = 7 kcal per gram of alcohol + 4 kcal per gram of carbohydrate. Strength and carbohydrate per style come from USDA FoodData Central SR Legacy values per 100 g (red 85 kcal, white 82, rose 83, dessert 152 to 160).

Frequently asked questions
How many calories do three glasses of wine a week add up to?
At 124 kcal per 5 US fl oz glass of red wine, three glasses a week come to 372 kcal. Over 52 weeks, that adds up to 19,343 kcal. Enter 3 in the Glasses per week box to see these totals for your own glass and wine.
Does glass size change the total?
Yes, in direct proportion. A 250 ml glass of red wine holds about twice the calories of a 125 ml glass. Restaurant pours are often bigger than 5 US fl oz, so choose Custom in the Glass size dropdown and enter the real volume if you know it.
How many calories are in a glass of rosé?
Rosé in the tool is set at 12% ABV and 3.8 g carbohydrate per 100 ml, so it sits a little lower on alcohol but higher on sugar than red or white. The result depends on the bottle, so check the label and enter its strength and carbohydrate figures.
What if my wine is not in the dropdown?
Choose Custom in the Wine dropdown and type the strength from the label into the Strength (% ABV) box. Add the carbohydrate figure if you have it, then set the glass size. The result is calculated from those numbers alone.
